Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. The cross you wear on your forehead reminds us to turn away from the temptations and false promises of the world. Our actions and living should point towards our eternal union with Christ. The cross is a sign to the world that you are willing to live boldly, humbly, and fully for Christ.
This weekend’s readings speak to us about sin, temptation, and Jesus’ time in the desert being tempted by Satan. Jesus’ life and ministry are a battle against Satan and sin. He came into the world to defeat evil and oppose all that is against God’s will, but he was still tempted. Lent draws us into the desert with Jesus to encounter our own temptation and weakness. You are invited to receive God’s mercy. Let him be your consolation and strength when you are in the desert.
- Readings Sunday, Feb. 22 – 1st Sunday of Lent (liturgical color, purple)
- Awaken Pamphlet (includes a powerful reflection on the words of the Lord’s Prayer and temptation)
- Notice the change in the worship space; we move from the color green to violet/purple (symbolizes repentance and forgiveness). This change is reflected in the color of the priests’ and deacons’ vestments, as well as in the altar cloths and banners. The music will begin to have a different theme, and we will refrain from singing the Gloria and saying Alleluia — we bring these back at Easter, a time of rejoicing!
As a reminder, we will celebrate two important rites with Jon, Michael, and Sam this weekend. The Rite of Sending will be celebrated at 11 a.m., and the Rite of Election will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. at St. Patrick, with the entire diocese and Archbishop Shelton in attendance. Please keep everyone preparing to receive sacraments this Easter and beyond in your prayers. The Spirit is working in their lives, and we have the honor of journeying with them as the Body of Christ.
