This week, there is no dismissal or learning session, but you are encouraged to attend Mass, which is an opportunity to encounter Jesus.
Last week, we heard about Jesus in the desert, and this week, we go to the mountaintop and hear the Transfiguration story. Recall that pivotal moments in biblical history occur on mountaintops, such as when God spoke to Moses (the giver of the law in the Old Testament) on the top of Mt. Sinai, giving him the Ten Commandments, or when Elijah (the greatest of all prophets) fled Mt. Sinai to escape death to find a renewed covenant with God.
Peter, James, and John, trusted apostles of Jesus, were taken to the mountain to pray. Here, with the man they knew well, they experience him differently. The dazzling white clothes are a sign of the glory of heaven shining forth, and the gift of the greatest prophets, Moses and Elijah, is a sign of Jesus’ fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. The Apostles heard God’s voice and were told to listen. It is a turning point in their faith, similar to the turning point the Elect experienced this past Sunday at the Rites of Sending and Election, which occur in the season of Lent, a season of transfiguration for all of us. This week’s message is full of God’s generosity, foreshadowing of Jesus’ death, and the reminder that you will bear hardships as a follower, but are granted eternal life through him. Are you willing to listen and be transfigured?
